A Monument Built to Proclaim a Message.
High above Jerusalem’s Temple Mount stands one of the most recognizable and contested religious structures in the world — the Dome of the Rock, completed around 691 CE under the Umayyad Caliph ʿAbd al-Malik. The interior and exterior of this magnificent octagonal shrine are adorned with intricate mosaics and lengthy Arabic inscriptions that quote or paraphrase verses from the Qur’an.
Among these inscriptions are statements such as:
“God is One… He neither begets nor is born.” (Surah 112:1-3)
“The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was only a messenger of God… So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say, ‘Three’… Glorified is He above having a son.” (Surah 4:171)
For over thirteen centuries, scholars and pilgrims alike have recognized these words as a direct theological response — even a denial — of the central Christian proclamation that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that God reveals Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
A Common Understanding
Both Muslims and Christians acknowledge the intention behind these inscriptions.
- Muslim tradition affirms that the text declares the uncompromising monotheism (tawḥīd) of Islam: God is absolutely one and cannot have offspring or partners.
- Christian observers, from early pilgrims to modern theologians, have likewise understood the Dome’s message as a rejection of the core tenets of Christianity — particularly the divine Sonship of Jesus and the doctrine of the Trinity.
In other words, the inscriptions are not misunderstood: they were designed to make a theological statement over the very site that once held the Jewish Temple, where sacrifices prefigured the ultimate sacrifice of Christ. To Christians, this carries profound spiritual symbolism — a visible reminder of the ongoing debate between faiths over the true nature of God and His revelation in Christ.
The Christian Response: What Scripture Declares
While the Dome of the Rock proclaims “He begets not,” the Bible proclaims with equal clarity that God sent His only begotten Son into the world to save it.
Below are several key verses that affirm what the inscriptions deny.
1. God’s Love Revealed Through His Son
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
— John 3:16
This is the heart of the Gospel. God’s fatherhood is not biological, but spiritual and relational — the eternal bond between the Father and the Son within the divine nature.
2. The Word Was With God and Was God
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
— John 1:1, 14
Far from being a created messenger, Jesus — the Word — is eternal, fully divine, and the very expression of God’s glory in human form.
3. The Father’s Testimony
“And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are My beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.’”
— Mark 1:11
At Christ’s baptism, the Father Himself bears witness to the Son. This is no metaphor — it is divine revelation.
4. The Apostolic Witness
“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.”
— 1 John 4:15
Faith in Jesus’ Sonship is not optional for Christians; it is the very foundation of fellowship with God.
5. The Ultimate Confession
“Who do you say that I am?” Jesus asked. Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’”
— Matthew 16:15-16
Jesus affirmed Peter’s confession, calling it revealed by the Father Himself — not by human reasoning.
A Clash of Creeds, and a Call to Truth
The Dome of the Rock’s inscriptions represent one of history’s earliest architectural expressions of Islamic theology — a bold declaration that “God has no son.” Yet for Christians, these very words underscore the eternal question Jesus asked two thousand years ago:
“Who do you say that I am?”
To deny the Son is, in Christian belief, to miss the very heart of God’s revelation and redemption plan.
The Bible teaches that God’s oneness is not contradicted by His triune nature but revealed through it. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct in person yet united in essence — a mystery beyond human logic but consistent with divine love.
Conclusion
Standing before the Dome of the Rock today, visitors encounter not just an architectural masterpiece, but a theological monument — one that still proclaims the difference between Islam’s vision of God and Christianity’s revelation of God in Christ.
Christians respond not with hostility but with the same invitation spoken by Jesus Himself:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6
And that remains the cornerstone of the Christian faith — not built of stone and gold, but upon the living Rock, Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.
A Loving Warning to All Muslims
“He who does not have the Son does not have the Father.” — 1 John 2:23
Forgiveness of sin comes only through the sacrifice that Jesus, the Son of God, made when He willingly laid down His life as a ransom — paying the price required to atone for the sins of all who believe in Him.
Rejecting Jesus and the salvation He offers is no different than embracing the enemy of your soul, Satan, and disregarding all the harm he has caused humanity. Hell was not created for people. It was prepared as an eternal place of separation for Satan and his demons. God does not send anyone to Hell — rather, by rejecting the truth of what God has done for them, people choose that path for themselves.
Islam teaches its followers to reject Jesus as the Son of God — plain and simple.
But Jesus still calls out to every heart:
“Who do you say that I am?”
Today — right now — may be the most important moment of your life, one that determines not only how you live today but where you will spend eternity.
Ask God sincerely to reveal Himself to you — to show you that He is who He claims to be, that Jesus is truly His Son, and that the only way to the Father is through the Son.
Pray from your heart: tell God that you accept Jesus’ sacrifice and forgiveness for your sins — and you will be forgiven.
In recent months, tens of thousands of Muslims around the world have prayed this very prayer. God has answered by revealing Himself to them — through dreams, visions, and the still small voice that whispers in their spirit:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6
You are being tested. And though I may be a stranger, far away, I assure you — this is not a test you can afford to ignore or fail.
It is no accident that you are reading this right now.
May God open your heart and bless you with the understanding that He loves you more than you can possibly imagine.
