The Next Great Prophetic Event Before the Rapture

When I was a little boy, seven or eight years old, every day I would rush home from school and turn on the only radio we had in the house. I would listen to Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy, sponsored by Wheaties. If you sent in ten box tops, you got something very important: a decoder ring. Man, I ate those Wheaties until they were coming out of my ears, but I got my decoder ring!

It was important because every day Jack Armstrong would have an exciting story, ending with a cliffhanger. For example, Jack was tied up in a little room with a huge barrel of blasting powder, a burning fuse going straight to it. The program went off the air! Without my decoder ring, I couldn’t have slept that night—what would happen to my hero Jack Armstrong? But then they gave a secret message. Using the ring, you would decode it, and it would always say: “Jack Armstrong will escape.” And then I could sleep, because I knew what the future held.

I had a friend who stole my decoder ring. He thought he’d know the secrets, but when he brought it back, he said, “It doesn’t work.” The trick was not only to write down the decoded numbers, but also to hold the paper up to a mirror to get the final message. He didn’t know that part!

Now, what am I telling you? The Bible is our decoder ring for the future. But there are some things you must have to understand it. First, you must pray. That’s why we prayed the prayer of Psalm 119:18, “Open my eyes.” You must desire to know what the Word says.

When I listened to Jack Armstrong, I never missed it. After school every evening, I was there. My dad may have wanted to listen to a ball game, but we only had one radio, and I had to hear my program. That was the Great Depression, but it was a bright spot.

The Bible interprets itself, and here’s another key to decoding it: “When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense. Therefore take every word in its ordinary, primary, usual, literal meaning unless the facts of the immediate context, studied in light of fundamental related passages and axiomatic truth, clearly indicate otherwise.”

When I was a student at Bob Jones College, the greatest Bible teacher I ever met—Dr. David L. Cooper—came to speak to us preacher boys. Dr. Bob introduced him as the greatest Bible scholar who ever lived. I had grown up in a fundamental church, but I still couldn’t grasp many things in Scripture. Dr. Cooper gave us his Golden Rule of Interpretation (which I just quoted), and all of a sudden, something burned in my heart. I realized that unless I could apply that golden rule, I could never be the Bible teacher I wanted to be.

So, I went through four years of college, majoring in Bible and minoring in American Literature. Then I went to seminary and studied Hebrew and Greek. But no one taught me how to work the “decoder ring” to dig into the depths of the Word of God. Later, while pastoring a large church in Minneapolis, I realized I could never be the preacher I wanted to be unless I studied under Dr. Cooper in California.

A miracle happened: on the very day I resigned my church, a letter from a member in Minneapolis crossed paths with a letter from her sister in Oceanside, California. Both churches suddenly needed pastors. I called the chairman of the pulpit committee at Oceanside and said, “I’ll be in California; I’d love to preach for you.” (My “business” was to study with Dr. Cooper.) Tim LaHaye and I drove out together. I preached, and they gave me a unanimous call. That Sunday night, the chairman told me, “I know you’re the man God wants as our pastor.” He explained, “We prayed that whoever came to preach would deliver a message on the Second Coming.” That night, I preached on the Second Coming—and 16 people were saved.

Every Monday and Tuesday, I drove to Los Angeles to study with Dr. Cooper—through the Old Testament in Hebrew, and the New Testament in Greek. I finally had the decoder ring to understand the Bible. Dr. Cooper taught us principles like the Law of Double Reference and the Law of Recurrence. The Book became a different book because I learned how to study it.

Beloved, the Bible gives us a decoder for the future. Without it, people are frightened. But with it, we understand God’s plan and can face the days ahead with confidence in Christ.
