Background

David Wilkerson (1931–2011) was a pastor, evangelist, and author best known for founding Teen Challenge, a Christian outreach ministry to troubled youth and drug addicts that now operates worldwide. He also established Times Square Church in New York City, a thriving multi-ethnic congregation in the heart of Manhattan.

Wilkerson gained international recognition with his book The Cross and the Switchblade, which told the story of his ministry among New York street gangs and drug addicts in the late 1950s. A powerful preacher with a prophetic voice, he often warned of coming judgment while calling believers to holiness, repentance, and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
