The largest city in California is Los Angeles, a name that means “The Angels” in Spanish. Yet today, it might better be called the City of Fallen Angels — or perhaps Lost Angeles.

Known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, Los Angeles produces much of what enters our homes through the glowing screen of television. Unfortunately, much of that content spreads moral decay rather than light. Just over the hills lies the San Fernando Valley, infamously known as the Pornography Capital of the World.

Having lived in Los Angeles for more than 20 years, I’ve witnessed one judgment after another — earthquakes, firestorms, mudslides, riots, and blackouts. It often feels as if God is trying to get the attention of a city that refuses to listen.

Fires, Floods, and Fury

Just weeks ago, wildfires in Southern California reduced over 3,500 homes to ashes. Days later, a freak thunderstorm hovered over South Central Los Angeles during rush hour, dumping five inches of rain in two hours. Cars were pelted by golf ball–sized hail, lightning struck more than 150 times, and rivers of muddy water three feet deep flooded the streets.

Thousands of vehicles stalled as traffic lights went dark. Hundreds of homes—many never before at risk—were suddenly flooded with water and sewage. Former Governor Gray Davis declared a state of emergency, but within days, the stories of loss and despair vanished from the news cycle.

South Central Los Angeles remains a place plagued by crime, addiction, and hopelessness. Gangs and drugs have stolen the lives of countless young people, while many residents feel powerless to change the direction of their communities. It’s a place both spiritually and physically lost—a stark reflection of a world turning away from God.

As I watched children play in piles of hail under the sunny skies the next day, I couldn’t help but wonder: Has God gotten the attention of the people of Los Angeles? Such storms simply don’t happen here by chance.

The Trumpets of God and the Coming Rapture

Just when I thought I had studied every angle of the Rapture, I heard a new teaching that inspired me to look again at Old Testament foreshadows of this coming event. Scripture is clear: there will come a time when God calls His people home, away from His wrath and judgment on the earth.

Hosea 6
“After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.”

Exodus 34:2
“…Be ready in the morning, and then come up… ‘forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance.’”

Numbers 10:1
“The LORD said to Moses: ‘Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community together and for having the camps set out.’”

Matthew 24:30–31
“At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.”

1 Thessalonians 4:14–18
“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God… and so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.”

Revelation 8:1–2
“When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.”

Revelation 10:7
“But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”

1 Corinthians 15:51–52
“Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.”

The first trumpet of God dealt with Israel and the Law (Exodus 19). The last trumpet will call the Church upward in grace, gathering believers to heaven before the coming wrath of God.

Conclusion: A City in the Balance

Los Angeles stands as both a marvel of human creativity and a warning of moral collapse. Between wildfires, floods, and spiritual darkness, perhaps the Lord is once again calling His people to wake up and return to Him.

The City of Angels has become the City of the Lost, but there is still time for redemption before the Rapture—before the trumpet sounds and judgment begins.
