The Pretribulation
Rapture
J.D. Farag: Pre-Tribulation Rapture Proof – 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
In this message titled “Pre-Tribulation Rapture Proof” from 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, Pastor J.D. Farag shares three key biblical reasons why the Rapture of the Church must take place before the 7-Year Tribulation. Join Pastor J.D. as he unpacks the hope and assurance believers have in Christ’s imminent return.
Please turn in your Bibles to 1 Thessalonians chapter 4. Our text is verses 13–18. I’ll ask you to stand if you’re able as I read; if not, remaining seated is fine.
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 (NIV)
Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. You’re still going to grieve, but not like those who don’t have hope—and here’s why.
For we believe that Jesus died and rose again—and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Wow—chicken skin! Let’s pray.
Prayer:
Thank You, Lord. Would You, as only You can, bless and anoint the teaching of Your Word? Bless it to our understanding, especially concerning this doctrine and this passage before us today. Speak by Your Holy Spirit, we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen and amen. You may be seated. Thank you.
It probably goes without saying—judging by the looks on your faces as I read this passage—that many of us have been looking forward to this text, and for obvious reasons. Chief among them is the specificity with which the Apostle Paul, by the Spirit of God, writes to this church concerning the sound doctrine of the rapture of the church.
In these six verses we have three—of what I would argue are many, even numerous—proofs in Scripture for why the rapture has to happen before the seven-year Tribulation.
“Pastor, that’s pretty dogmatic.”
You better believe it.
“Isn’t the Pre-Tribulation Rapture doctrine not a matter of salvation?”
That’s correct. However—while it may not be a matter of salvation, it most certainly is a matter of sanctification. Here’s why: the impact of this truth—this sound doctrine of a Pre-Tribulation Rapture—profoundly shapes how we live.
Listen to what the Apostle John wrote (1 John 3:2–3):
“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.”
Those who truly live with the anticipation—the expectation—of the Lord’s imminent return purify themselves. They get their affairs in order. They live ready, because He can come at any time.
If I believe the church goes through part of, or all of, the Tribulation, I have to rip out pages of my Bible—verses like the ones before us and many others.
Today I want to show three proofs (yes, proofs—not “theories”) from our text that the rapture must be Pre-Tribulation. And for anyone watching online who disagrees—let’s agree to disagree agreeably. But as far as the Word of God and this passage are concerned, here’s why the rapture absolutely must be before the seven years:
1) The Trumpet Call of God (v. 16)
Paul says the Lord will descend with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God.
In Scripture, there are two trumpets:
The trumpet of angels—for Israel (e.g., Matthew 24:30–31: the Son of Man returns; angels gather His elect—Israel—from the four winds).
The trumpet of God—for the church (our text).
Fail to distinguish Israel from the church, and you get into trouble (this is where Replacement Theology goes off the rails). The purpose of the Tribulation is the salvation of Israel—not the purification of the Bride who is already saved. The trumpet here is God’s trumpet for the church, not angels’ trumpets for Israel.
2) We Are Caught Up in the Air (v. 17)
Verse 17 is where the word rapture is found—depending on your Bible’s language. In Greek it’s harpazō (“caught up/snatched away with force and speed”); in Latin raptūrus; in English we render it “caught up.”
Paul says we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them (the resurrected dead in Christ) in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Note the order:
The dead in Christ rise first (bodily resurrection).
Then we who are alive are transformed in the twinkling of an eye (cf. 1 Cor. 15:51–52), putting off corruption and putting on incorruption.
“How does this prove Pre-Trib?”
Because Jewish wedding customs (typology) beautifully illustrate it:
Ketubah (Marriage Covenant): A written covenant for the bride. Our New Covenant is written in Scripture, fulfilled in Christ.
Cup & Bread (Kiddushin): The groom offers the cup; the bride drinks to accept. Jesus sealed the New Covenant in His blood (Last Supper). Every communion is a betrothal celebration.
Price (Mohar): The groom pays a price to show his love. Jesus paid it all at the cross.
Preparing a Place: The groom goes to the father’s house to build a bridal chamber. Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you… in my Father’s house…” (John 14:1–3).
Only the Father Knows: Only the father knows the day/hour of the groom’s return to snatch the bride. Jesus said no one knows the day or hour—only the Father.
Shout & Trumpet: The groomsmen go before with a shout and a trumpet. We will be caught up at the trumpet of God.
Abduction/Snatching: The groom catches away (harpazō) the bride—as a thief in the night—to the bridal chamber.
Seven (Shavuot) Days: Bride and groom consummate and celebrate for seven days. The Church with Christ for seven years.
Wedding Feast: Afterward, a great feast—the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.
Revelation supports this timeline:
Chapters 2–3: Church (mentioned 19 times).
Rev 4:1: John hears a voice like a trumpet—“Come up here” (caught up). From here forward it’s future.
Chapters 6–19: the Tribulation—note: the church is not mentioned. Why? She’s not there—she’s with the Bridegroom.
This typology is consistent and crucial—don’t break it.
3) We Are to Encourage One Another with These Words (v. 18)
Paul says, “Therefore encourage one another with these words.” The Thessalonians were discouraged and battle-weary. How could Paul encourage them if the church must endure the Seal, Trumpet, and Bowl judgments? “A third of the earth will be destroyed… therefore encourage each other…”? That doesn’t fit.
If the rapture were mid or post-Trib, Paul would warn them to survive—not encourage them about escape.
This ties straight into 1 Thessalonians 5:3 (next chapter):
“While people are saying, ‘Peace and security,’ destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.”
Contrast: They will not escape; we—who are alive and remain—will.
Throughout the Old Testament, God paints pictures of a Pre-Trib rapture:
Joseph takes a Gentile bride before the seven-year famine.
Enoch (pre-Flood) “walked with God and was not, for God took him.”
Daniel 3: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (picture of Israel) in a furnace heated seven times—saved in the Tribulation; Daniel (picture of the church) is absent, exalted beforehand.
Closing
Church, be encouraged. Many of you are suffering and discouraged. Let this truth strengthen your hearts: soon and very soon, the trumpet will sound. The dead in Christ will rise first, and we who are alive and remain will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
Lord, come quickly. Maranatha.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
